DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM AND POSTER PRESENTATION COMPETITION
Conference
Convergence is a transdisciplinary approach to solving problems. It is a human, interactive process aimed at breaking through artificial domain boundaries that limit innovation. Although examples can be found throughout history, it has become increasing clear that the optimal solutions come from combined approaches.
In 2014, the National Research Council released a report titled, “Convergence: Facilitating transdisciplinary integration of life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and beyond”. In it, the committee announced the integration of the physical and life sciences as a recent, revolutionary development that should be promoted.
This came as no surprise to members of SDPS. More than twenty years ago, researchers from many disciplines formed the Society of Design and Process Science to promote “transformative research and education through transdisciplinary means”. Moreover, in the SDPS view, transdisciplinary processes are not limited to combinations of physical and life sciences. Consider how the “soft” sciences have contributed to the development of user interfaces.
According to the Convergence report, the tools for convergence exist now. They can be found in the lessons learned from interdisciplinary cultures, team-based science and engineering, industrial research laboratories, and revisions in STEM education.
The 2017 SDPS conference promotes convergence through its theme and topics. Although appealingly varied, the topics are grounded in the idea that transdisciplinary designs and processes can connect people in ways that transform communities. The conference also promotes convergence through the physical layout and schedule of events. Both are designed to facilitate rewarding and productive interaction among members. You are heartily invited to attend and participate.
All submissions to SDPS Conference are peer reviewed and accepted papers will be published in SDPS conference proceedings, ISSN 1090-9389. They will be submitted to Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index™ (CPCI).
Venue
The SDPS 2017 conference will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, located in the southeastern United States. At the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is rich with American history and known for southern hospitality. Birmingham is especially beautiful in autumn, when the hills are ablaze with deep reds and yellows.
Conference attendees are encouraged to stay at the Double Tree by Hilton hotel, the conference venue. Situated in downtown Birmingham, the hotel is near nationally recognized restaurants, shopping opportunities and historic points of interest. Double Tree by Hilton offers free shuttle service to and from the Birmingham International Airport. The hotel is adjacent to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). UAB features a large, urban “greenspace” campus and a state-of-the-art, nationally ranked teaching hospital.
Venue: SDPS 2017 will be held at Doubletree by Hilton, UAB, 808 20th St S, Birmingham, AL 35205

Doctoral Symposium
SDPS 2017 DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM
The SDPS 2017 doctoral symposium is an opportunity for doctoral students to showcase their dissertation research. The symposium will have two tracks: a) healthcare science and informatics, and b) technology and engineering. Participants will select a track when submitting a required two page abstract. The abstract will be written according the format set out by the symposium organizers.
All submissions will be considered by reviewers assigned by the symposium program chair. Notifications of decisions will be made at least a month before the start date of the conference. Three awards will be awarded in each track. Because of limitations in space and time, only 24 submissions will be accepted.
Participation in the symposium will involve a 10 minute oral presentation on the speaker’s doctoral research topic, with 5 minutes granted for questions and answers. The symposium will occur on the first day of the conference. Each presentation will be attended by a team of three judges. Judges will evaluate presentations using a pre-defined evaluation method. Award-winning students will be recognized at the Awards Banquet.
